The XVI edition of the International Symposium of Sculpturing of Carrara is being officially opened on Saturday July 23rd in Piazza Alberica: this year there are many novelties ranging form a real logistic revolution to more exquisitely artistic aspects.
For the 2005 edition, eleven artists have been asked to express themselves about the theme “Lavoro senza fine… fine del lavoro” (“endless work… the end and the aim of the work”) and they are working in three locations in the heart of the “Alpi Apuane”, the very place where marble – the material they’re working – is mined. Fantiscritti, Ponti di Vara and a quarry in a tunnel have been chosen as sets for the artists’ work and visitors will be able to reach those places thanks a bus service leaving twice a day for a kind of “Symposium-tour”.
Nonetheless, Piazza Alberica, the historical seat of the event, is not going to be abandoned: in the centre of Carrara are being placed three stands, a refreshment-room, a projection room – where people will be able to watch both the “live” of the artists at work and the movies of the past editions – and a meeting point with artists and critics of art.
For this edition have been arranged not only new locations but a new timetable as well: every afternoon in Piazza Alberica are taking place collateral events starting at 21.30: film projections, debates (with the participation of the sculptors), concerts and theatrical performances.
As far as the more exquisitely artistic aspects are concerned, the most important novelty is the artists’ selection rules: as Bruno Corà (the art director of the XVI Symposium is an important critic of art, a professor of Contemporary Art History and the director of “Camec” museum of La Spezia) has underlined in his interview with Contatto Radio, this year the artists have been chosen by a jury of experts, who at the end of the event are judging the works as well. Among the members there are some professors form the Academy of Fine Arts of Carrara and world-famous critics as Thomas Deecke, Keterina H.Koskina, Franz Kaiser, Thierry Dufrene and Enver Hadziomerspahaic.
